Tokens, NFTs, blockchain – these are words that arouse great emotions in the gaming community. RoboHero rides in on a white horse and shows that games are, above all, supposed to be a lot of fun. What is RoboHero, why will it satisfy every gamer who likes tactical sci-fi and what role does Web3 play in it? I invite you to review the Polish gaming hit Web3!
Mechanics and basics of the RohoHero game
What do you expect from a Web3 game? You’re probably afraid of a literal tsunami of messages like “buy NFT tokens! Increase your chances of winning with NFTs.” If so, RoboHero is a very positive surprise because the game focuses on gameplay and only the Web3 layer begins to show through underneath. Thanks to this, each player can check the game first and only then connect the wallet. You can play RoboHero just as well as any other mobile game – without even experiencing the Web3 ecosystem, just enjoying beating the skin of your opponents.
You start the game with a tutorial that introduces you to the basics. Controlling the robot is incredibly simple – your robotic protagonist moves along a hexagonal grid. The basis for movement and various actions (such as attacking other robots or taking over towers) are action points.
The game is divided into turns, so you have to make strategic decisions – spend all your points on a move? Lean out from behind cover and attack, or take over a tower to defeat enemies tactically? Additionally, during the game you can also use items (force field, grenade, first aid kit) that give the player an advantage. Using items also requires planning – for example, throwing a grenade at an enemy robot that is standing next to our robotic protagonist is not the best idea. The firepower of the grenade will defeat the opponent, but will also deeply injure the player himself.
As if the possibilities weren’t enough, the player also has a reconnaissance drone, because the map is covered with a classic fog of war at the very beginning of the game (you only see your opponents a few hexagons in front of you). The drone allows you to plan strategic movements in the next turns.
Audio, video and AI
It cannot be denied that the audio-visual setting is one of the very important details of gaming productions. It is thanks to the sounds and graphics that we feel greater or lesser immersion with the game world. In the case of RoboHero, the creators set their own universe (it is quite possible that this is the earth 2-3 thousand years from now, when AI took over and exterminated humanity), in which three robot factions fight for resources. Ether, Plasma and Deuter differ in design, and the player can also define the appearance of his robotic protagonist by choosing his faction.
The graphics are very comic book, which is especially visible in the outlines of the assets’ contours. The musical setting strongly refers to the classic syth-pop sounds of the late 80s and 90s. As for the sound design, all actions in the game are reproduced in sounds – thanks to this you will hear the mechanical and hydraulic sounds of moving robots.
The artificial intelligence of the opponents is at a high level – if you expect that the enemy robots will give you a head start, you will be wrong. Even the initial missions in the campaign require the player to plan and approach each battle strategically. It is also worth noting that for this reason the pace of the game is quite slow
A Web3 game continuing the legacy of tactical classics
The gameplay style in RoboHero is reminiscent of classic tactical games such as XCOM or Warhammer 40k Mechanicus. Importantly, in the tutorial and in the single player campaign there is no intrusive encouragement to purchase the Robo token. It is clear that the developers know the market and the mood well, because they have created a game that will appeal to both experienced players and those who are looking for an addictive Web3 game that will offer much more than an extensive layer of a decentralized ecosystem.
Talking about the Web3 ecosystem, it is a separate game within a game. Why? Because items, RoboHeros and other NFTs, are items that can be bought and sold. All for ROBO tokens. This makes the Web3 layer unobtrusive and allows for immersion for players who want something more than just a good tactical game for mobile devices. RoboHero is a title that is definitely one of the best examples of combining traditional gameplay with the Web3 layer. This is the type of production that the entire Web3 gaming industry should target. Decentralized games have huge potential, and RoboHero shows it at every step.
