Laos wants to pay off his public debt. All with bitcoins.
Laos will reach for bitcoins
Laos wants to start digging bitcoins. The government plans to do this using hydroelectric power plants. The country has been exporting electricity for years: last year, it has been transmitted abroad for about a quarter of the country’s exports.
Chinese media write about the case, which cite Witoon Permpongsacharoen, director of Mekong Energy and Ecology Network:
Laos permission to use electricity to extract cryptocurrencies clearly does not result from internal conditions. This is due to the fact that Laos is heavily indebted and is unable to pay off his debts.
In other words, the government decided to use its water conditions and the possibilities offered by Mining, to pay its debts.
However, this will not be Laos’s first approach to extracting digital assets. In September 2021, a pilot program was launched in the country: six companies for digging and Bitcoin trading were authorized. At that time, this step was an attempt to download miners to the region who were thrown out of China, which at that time attacked the BTC digging industries.
However, Laos’s promining project did not last long. In August 2023, the State Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyczne Électricité du Laos suspended the supply of electricity to Bitcoin miners, citing drought and current deficiencies. In May 2024, cryptocurrency mines were responsible for “over a third of energy consumption in the country” and contributed to breaks in power supply.
Now it’s time for a new breakthrough. The World Bank predicts that the service of Laos’s external public debt will be about USD 1.3 billion on average in 2025-2028, or about 9% of GDP per year.
Bhutan also copies of bitcoin
Not only Laos goes in this direction. Bhutan has been coping with bitcoin for years and treated as a strategic budget. The country’s government has been coping with cryptocurrency since 2017, when 1 BTC was worth around $ 5,000. Uses water energy in the process. In May 2023, he also established cooperation with Bitdeer listed on NASDAQ. All to develop a 100% non -emission BTC digging method in the country.
As a result of these efforts, Bhutan is currently one of the largest BTC owners.
