The problem of deepfakes on the X platform is getting bigger, although not only the former Tweeter is facing this plague. This was perfectly demonstrated by the fact that over 35 fake Elon Musks broadcast live on YouTube on June 6. The evil twin brothers, of course, persuaded in various ways to invest in specific memecoins or send BTC and ETH to a specific address in order to (be careful) double them. All this happened during the launch of the SpaceX Starship rocket.
35 fake Elon Musks with their own YouTube broadcasts
What too much is not healthy. In the case of fake Elon Musks, this saying definitely resonates even more strongly, because the broadcast of the launch of the Starship rocket from SpaceX will go down in history for two reasons. The first is, of course, the successful launch of the rocket, and the second is over 35 fake Elon Musks broadcasting live on YouTube at the same time. According to researchers from Avast Threat Labs, scammers used deepfake technology to copy the image and voice of the billionaire. The purpose of these over 35 live broadcasts was to convince users to invest in various suspicious memecoins.
The scammers took advantage of the moment perfectly, because over 35 fake Elon Musks were broadcasting the launch of SpaceX's Starship rocket. One of the YouTube channels pretended to be the official SpaceX account and ran three streams simultaneously, attracting over 170,000 viewers.
What did the deepfakes created by scammers look like?
Live broadcasts of 35 fake Elon Musks showed a wide-angle image of the billionaire speaking on stage during an outdoor SpaceX event. The vast majority of the broadcasts looked fake, due to, for example, Elon Musk's face being blurry. However, some of them were so well done that, along with the AI voice, the broadcasts looked real and authentic.
The deepfake Myusk instructed viewers to send their BTC and ETH to a specific address to receive double the amount of their contribution on the occasion of a successful rocket launch and landing. Fake Musk assured:
This is not a fake, this is a real promotion and I personally guarantee it.
It is difficult to say how many people believed in this type of scam. However, this does not change the fact that there will be more and more such broadcasts of fake Elon Musks.
