Italy is a positive surprise. Bitcoin (BTC) is the third most popular online payment method in the country, according to new data from marketing analytics firm SEMRush.
Italy: Bitcoin takes third place
On October 31, Italian daily La Stampa reported that a Boston-based marketing analysis firm had found that Bitcoin was a solid third in Italy’s list of most widely used online payment systems, with only PayPal and Italian prepaid card platform PostePay ahead of the cryptocurrency.
The data further revealed that Italians are using Bitcoin to make online purchases more widely than they do using traditional credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
According to La Stampa, Bitcoin is used more than 215,000 times per month for various online purchases in Italy, while American Express is used only 189,000 times per month. Visa, MasterCard and other credit cards handle just 33,950 online transactions per month.
Paypal and PostePay in the lead
The Californian online payment service PayPal remains the undisputed leader in the online payment market in Italy, with around 1.3 million payment transactions per month. The Italian payment processor PostePay handles slightly fewer, at 1.2 million transactions per month.
It is worth noting that the data did not include the number of PayPal and PostePay accounts that are linked to credit cards, so the results could be even better for the two leaders. However, this does not detract from Bitcoin’s success in the country.
Italians are buying more and more online
La Stampa wrote that in 2018, the total value of e-commerce transactions amounted to more than 40 billion euros, with 62% of Italians making at least one purchase online that year. We have to wait for the 2019 figures.

It is worth recalling that making payments with BTC is also quite easy in our country. This is thanks to the company InPay (read more about it here).
