New York mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo wants to make New York a center for cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence.
Andrew Cuomo brings up the topic of cryptocurrencies during the election campaign
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is running for mayor of the city and, as he claims, wants to make it a “global center” of new technologies, including AI and cryptocurrencies. He has a plan for how to change the way the city integrates new technologies, co-host Eleanor Terrett said Saturday Crypto in America.
Part of the plan is to create a new position: director of innovation, whose aim will be to “attract” more investments to the city, create jobs and stimulate the innovation market.
There will also be an Innovation Council with three advisory committees on cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence and biotechnology, which will “advise on implementation, workforce development and reducing red tape in these emerging industries.”
Our man in New York?
Cuomo has been a household name in the cryptocurrency industry for years: he advised cryptocurrency exchange OKX in a federal investigation that resulted in it admitting to several violations and agreeing to pay more than $500 million in fines and penalties.
His campaign is somewhat reminiscent of that of current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has promoted himself as a pro-innovation candidate and during his term recently established the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology, which “will promote the responsible use of digital assets and blockchain technologies, expand the economic opportunities of New Yorkers, attract world-class talent, and strengthen the city’s position as a global center.” financial and technological innovations.
However, Adams recently withdrew from the race for mayor because his position in the polls is low and his chances for re-election are rather slim.
Cuomo is competing against poll leader Democrat Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The elections will be held on November 4.
Although Mamdani does not comment on cryptocurrencies, he is famous for his progressive views and represents the left wing of the Democratic Party, which may suggest an aversion to bitcoin and the entire digital asset industry.
