A BAYC holder lost three rare NFTs in a phishing attack. Scammers on the wave of fraud

The BAYC holder lost three NFTs worth a total of 54.8505 ETH, or approximately $164,400. The alleged attack on rare NFT tokens was allegedly the result of a phishing scam. The case is being investigated by Etherscan and ZachXBT, one of the most popular blockchain detectives. It is still unclear how this attack occurred.

BAYC holder loses NFT worth over $160,000!

Hacker attacks are becoming more and more daring, and in their phishing activities they rely on extremely creative ideas for extorting data. Not so long ago, there was a very loud case in which hackers impersonated journalists in order to accuse the owner of the NFT BAYC. Although Yuga Labs’ collection of bored monkeys has been clearly losing value in recent weeks, sliding through the price shallows, these tokens still cost a lot of money.

The Bored Ape NFTs that were hacked are BAYC #7531, BAYC #6736 and BAYC #2100. According to the OpenSea NFT marketplace, they are valued at 21 ETH ($62,960), 15.8505 WETH ($47,500), and 18 ETH ($54,000), respectively. Why were these three NFTs so rare? Well, BAYC #7531 contains the white fur feature, which only 4% of the total number of 10,000 NFTs have. BAYC #6736 has the “little smile” trait with a rarity of 3%, and BAYC #2100 has the traits Bored Pizza (0.5%), colorful print T-shirt (1%), short hair (2%), eye patches (3 %), gold earring (4%) and pink fur (5%).

How the BAYC NFT was stolen still remains a mystery

At the moment, it is not known how hackers managed to take over rare tokens. Nevertheless, we can guess that the BAYC holder has fallen victim to a clever phishing scam that has recently targeted bored monkey token holders. Such hackers very often use the age-old technique of social engineering, i.e. manipulating the interlocutor by impersonating specific people.

This is exactly how a group of hackers tried to rob another BAYC owner a few months ago. The hackers impersonated journalists from a large newspaper and claimed that they wanted to interview the owner of BAYC tokens. That theft did not take place, but the BAYC holder described today could have fallen victim to a similar scam.
