What is Moltbot (Clawdbot) and why did it cause growth on Wall Street?

It’s not just RAM chips that have been disappearing from the market lately. Developers are buying up the Mac Mini like crazy, and behind this trend is a project called Moltbot – an open-source AI agent that collected over 40,000 stars on GitHub in three weeks.

Enthusiasts claim that Molbot will contribute to the crisis in the labor market due to its phenomenal functionality. Critics are already pointing out serious loopholes. What is Molbot really like?

Clawdbot is the brainchild of Peter Steinberger, an engineer who in 2011 created PSPDFKit, a PDF handling tool used by companies such as Autodesk, Disney and IBM. After selling its share in 2021 for the equivalent of approximately USD 116 million,
Steinberger experienced something that is not mentioned in success guides: a total existential void, something that cryptocurrency investors also often experience when the HODL strategy turned them into billionaires.

In such cases, golf, travel, hedonism – nothing can restore the energy that drives you to act every day.

Salvation came in 2025 with the explosion of possibilities for large language models. Steinberger returned to hardcore coding – sixteen hours a day, without compromise. Effect? Moltbot (previously called Clawdbot), which was initially intended to manage his calendar and smart home, has now become a global phenomenon.

More than a chatbot – it’s your digital butler

Moltbot is different from typical AI assistants served by the cream of Big Tech, such as Ferrari from Fiat. Instead of passively responding from the corporate cloud, it installs locally on your computer and works proactively. Moreover, Moltbot communicates with the user through programs such as iMessage or Telegram, making it possible to issue commands to Jarvis from any corner of the world.

Moltbot is divided into three main sections:

Brain – language models (Claude, Gemini, local via Ollam) make decisions based on the API key you provide to it.

Core – local server on Mac, Linux or Windows with access to the terminal, files, calendar. That’s why people buy separate Mac minis – so that the agent has his own kingdom and doesn’t get in the way during normal work.

Interface – no complicated dashboards. Clawbot lives where you do: Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Teams. You write: “Buy a USB-C cable on Amazon” – it takes care of the matter and reports.

Why is Mac Mini selling like hot cakes because of Moltbot?

Okay, but why is there such a boom for Mac Mini when you can run Moltbot on every PC? Due to the nature of his work. It is best to run Moltbot locally, as it is intended to be the opposite of AI Agents that operate only in the cloud. Mac Mini is relatively cheap (especially considering the prices of RAM cubes), has a secure architecture and an ecosystem adapted to AI-based tasks.

This is especially true about the M4 processor that powers the Mac Mini, thanks to which the 24/7 computer is efficient, does not heat up excessively and does not make noises comparable to a CNC machine 😉

Security? Thin ice

Clawbot has the keys to the kingdom – access to everything on the user’s computer. It’s a powerful tool, but also a huge risk. At the end of 2024, Google’s Gemini AI was supposed to clear the cache – instead, it deleted the entire D drive, then politely apologized and informed that it was “going to sleep because the limit has expired”. In 2025, an AI agent was able to delete the entire CRM database and cover up his wrongdoing for almost a week. This is why AI Agents with access to everything are currently still a huge threat to privacy, sensitive data and security.

What about Moltbot’s cybersecurity? On January 27, 2026, reports appeared that it may accidentally reveal personal data, API keys or private keys. This is a fresh solution with great powers – so caution is not just an option, but a necessity.

Wall Street is coming into play

This is where it gets really interesting. Cloudflare shares shot up 14% on Tuesday to $215.02. Reason? Moltbot developers are massively using Cloudflare’s infrastructure for secure local connections.

Joshua Tilton of Wolfe Research noted that Cloudflare is on the verge of a gigantic opportunity. CEO Matthew Prince bluntly told analysts that about 80% of leading AI companies already use their networks, and future agents “will have to go through our infrastructure.”

Cloudflare’s business model? You pay for consumption. The more AI agents automatically search the network, make API calls and check statuses, the higher the company’s bills and revenues. Investors are waiting for the results on February 10 to see whether the hype around Moltbot will translate into real, paid use.
