What is Grayscale investing in? We analyze the company’s portfolio

Grayscale Investments is a leading asset management company operating in the US market. Its offer includes, among others: Grayscale Bitcoin Trust and Bitcoin ETFs. But what exactly is he investing in? In this text, I will analyze her portfolio.

What is Grayscale Investments?

Grayscale Investments was one of the first companies to offer an investment product based on BTC – it did so already in 2013. This year, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) was converted to the BTC ETF. We are talking about an asset manager who is a pioneer and thinks a few years ahead.

Before we move on, let’s first explore Grayscale’s history together. The company was founded in 2013, just when Grayscale Bitcoin Trust was launched. The initiative was led by Barry Silbert, a well-known businessman from the cryptocurrency market, founder of Digital Currency Group (Grayscale is its subsidiary).

The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust was initially just a private trust. This means that accredited investors could use it. Everything changed after two years, when it became a publicly listed entity. This was of great importance because it also allowed people who were not registered with the SEC to use its services.

Since 2017, Grayscale has been in a real battle with the SEC over the creation of a bitcoin ETF. the breakthrough took place in September 2023 – the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in Washington found that the Commission had no right to refuse the company to create funds. This was a gateway to the creation of Bitcoin ETFs – not only the heroes of this text, but also other entities.

BTC ETFs launched in January this year.

Grayscale Investment Products

After this short lesson in recent history, we can move on to the main topic of the article, i.e. what Grayscale offers, and what exactly it invests in.

The company offers three different types of investment products – ETFs, cryptocurrency-backed products and an income fund focused on staking returns.

When it comes to ETFs, the matter is simple: they are based on BTC and ETH cryptocurrencies. The mentioned cryptocurrency-secured products are platforms that allow you to invest indirectly in LINK, MANA or SUI. Grayscale DeFi Fund, one of the funds in Grayscale’s arsenal, invests in five tokens from the DeFi market: UNI, AAVE and MKR.

In addition, there is the Grayscale Dynamic Income Fund, focused on staking returns: it is based on tokens that run on blockchains based on the Proof-of-Stake algorithm: SOL and NEAR. He not only passively invests in them, but also stakes in order to earn additional funds for investors. However, this is a product for accredited investors.

Grayscale also offers products that allow you to gain exposure to specific products from the token market. An example is Grayscale Aave Trust, which offers exposure to the AAVE token, which belongs to one of the lending platforms on the cryptocurrency market. This investment can be complemented by the purchase of Grayscale Avalanche Trust, which gives investors exposure to the AVAX token. The company’s portfolio also includes the Grayscale Future of Finance Equity ETF. This is a fund that allocates capital to “innovative enterprises that are an integral part of the evolution of the financial system to build a digital economy.”

This set also includes:

  • Grayscale Basic Attention Token Trust,
  • Grayscale Bitcoin Cash Trust,
  • Grayscale Bittensor Trust,
  • Grayscale Chainlink Trust,
  • Grayscale Decentraland Trust,
  • Grayscale Decentralized AI Fund,
  • Grayscale Filecoin Trust.
  • Grayscale Horizen Trust,
  • Grayscale Lido DAO Trust,
  • Grayscale Litecoin Trust,

  • Grayscale Solana Trust,
  • Grayscale Stacks Trust,
  • Grayscale Stellar Lumens Trust,
  • Grayscale Sui Trust,

As you can see, the company’s portfolio is wide and allows you to have exposure to many tokens and cryptocurrencies.

Preparing to update your portfolio

It’s still not over. The company periodically changes the composition of its portfolio. For example, according to the official announcement from October this year. Grayscale analyzed as many as 35 altcoins that would be added to the new product. Analysts were interested in altcoins from the following categories:

  • currencies,
  • Smart Contract platforms,
  • finances,
  • consumers,
  • services and tools.

All assets were listed Assets Under Considerationwhich may become the foundation for subsequent products. For example, recently the package of currencies included, among others: KAS, APT, ARB, TIA, CELO, POL TON, TRX, DOGE and WLD. The list is to be updated quarterly.
