In the early morning of April 10, 2026, 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama from Texas snuck up to Sam Altman’s house in San Francisco. At 3:37 a.m. he threw a Molotov cocktail at the entrance gate of the property and then fled on foot. No one was hurt, but that’s just the beginning of the story.
Less than an hour later, Moreno-Gama showed up outside OpenAI’s headquarters, where he threw a chair at the glass door and threatened to set the building on fire and kill everyone inside. He was detained there. He had something on him that chilled the investigators even more than the gun itself.
Manifesto, List and “Last Warning”
A document was found with the arrested person in which he described in detail his views – deeply hostile towards artificial intelligence and its creators. The first section was titled “Your Last Warning” and stated that Moreno-Gama “killed or attempted to kill” Altman. The document further includes the names and addresses of other AI company CEOs, board members and investors. Sounds like a thriller script? Unfortunately, this is not something new on Netflix, but a reality.
The second section described the threats AI poses to humanity, with a title referring to “our impending extinction.” The assassin ended the letter with words addressed directly to Altman: if he survives, he should take it as a sign from God and “redeem himself.”
Altman himself was supposed to die – a would-be assassination motivated by artificial intelligence
San Francisco prosecutors charged Moreno-Gama with attempted murder. At the same time, the federal Ministry of Justice brought charges of attempting to destroy property using explosives and possession of unregistered firearms.
The FBI conducted a search of the suspect’s house in Spring, Texas, and the agency’s director, Kash Patel, confirmed that this operation was linked to the attack in which Sam Altman was allegedly injured.
It wasn’t an impulse. It was planned, deliberate and extremely serious
FBI Special Agent Matt Cobo said.
A few days after the first incident, another incident occurred near Altman’s home – this time involving a firearm. Two people were detained.
Altman himself responded to the events on his blog, writing that he “underestimated the power of words and narrative” and calling on the AI industry to tone down its rhetoric. It’s hardly surprising – when the debate about the future of technology starts using Molotov cocktails, something has clearly gotten out of control.
