Nayib Bukele destroyed democracy in El Salvador? Shocking reform in the country!

Salvador authorities approved the president’s indefinite and extended his term to six years. All thanks to the changes in the constitution. In practice, this means strengthening the position of Nayib Bukele, a probitcoin politician who rules today in the country.

NAYIB BUKELE President

The package of five reforms, accepted by the 57: 3 votes, extends the president’s term from five to six years, eliminates voting in the second round, and tolerates the limit of the term of office of the head of state. In practice, it is a huge strengthening of bukele or, as the opposition claims, the legalization of dictatorship.

The president’s opponents warn that a strong concentration of power is introduced in the country, which threatens democratic institutions.

In fact, it is legalizing the current state of affairs, which – is true – differs from democratic standards. Bukele should not be president during this term, and his start in the last election enabled a fairly peculiar judgment of the Supreme Court. Supporters of the current regime explained this at that time the great popularity of the president, who later won the election in the first round.

New ideas, the Bukele party, defending the new reform and claims that the changes will save millions of USD from taxpayers’ money. The second round of elections itself costs the country apparently about USD 50 million, which is better to spend, e.g. on road infrastructure or hospitals. However, this is only powdering unpleasant realities – in El Salvador, democracy dies.

Marcela Villatoro, a deputy of the opposition nationalist Republican Party, was one of the three people who voted against changes and told the media that voting “for” meant the introduction of authoritarianism:

You do not realize what indefinite re -election brings: it leads to accumulation of power and weakens democracy … Corruption and clientelism appear, because nepotism is growing and inhibiting democracy and participation in political life.

The coolest dictator of the world

However, bukele has been called “the coolest dictator in the world” for years. And – if you believe the polls – it actually enjoys social support. A recent study conducted by the Public Opinion Laboratory of the University of Salvador showed that over 78% of respondents positively assessed his policy in the first year of the second term, which is now going on.

And it’s hardly surprising, because the leader of the new ideas declared war on the gangs, filled their prisons with their members and caused the El Salvador to change.

In the warming of his image, Bitcoin’s opening helped. Except that there are problems here. Last week, we learned from the international currency fund report (IMF) that Salvador has not bought a single Bitcoin since signing a contract with this entity regarding a loan worth USD 1.4 billion. It happened in December 2024. Blockchain’s analysis showed that this is true, and this shows that the Bitcoin office in El Salvador was lying to investors, – it claimed that the country is still buying 1 BTC a day.
