David Sacks warns that the real threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) is its use for government surveillance and information control, not physical extermination.
AI is not the Terminator
Donald Trump’s adviser on cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence, David Sacks, argues that the greatest threat posed by AI is not a rebellion of machines and a Terminator-style robot, but the creation of a dystopian vision of the world in which new technology spies on society and controls the information people receive.
On Monday’s episode of the a16z podcast, The Ben & Marc Show, Sacks discussed the Trump administration’s approach to regulating cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence. Of course, he criticized the previous administration, that of President Joe Biden, and “blue (democratic) states” such as California and Colorado for their “tough” approach to regulations protecting consumers from artificial intelligence, aimed at combating “algorithmic discrimination.” He said over-regulation could shape AI tools to fit the government’s ideological biases, which could then be used to distort information and facts if they do not fit the government’s specific goals.
We’re talking about Orwellian artificial intelligence here. We’re talking about artificial intelligence that lies, distorts answers, and constantly rewrites history to serve the current political agenda of those in power.
– he said.
There is also the issue of surveillance. Artificial intelligence will know everything about you. It will be your personal assistant and therefore the perfect tool for the government to monitor and control you. And in my opinion, this is by far the biggest risk associated with artificial intelligence
– he warned.
Regulatory problems
He argued that overregulation would also make it harder for AI companies to comply because it is virtually impossible to know all the ways people will use AI. He also suggested that laws already exist to punish abuses, such as anti-discrimination laws.
In his opinion, it is necessary to regulate the artificial intelligence market more liberally and to promote and support innovation.
By the way, he talked about the cryptocurrency market:
In the case of artificial intelligence it is about ‘how to unleash innovation’, and in the case of cryptocurrencies, I think it is more about ‘how to create regulatory certainty’.
