A game generated by AI from Elon Musk’s xAI already in 2026 – the future of gaming or a PR shot in the foot?

Elon Musk just announced that xAI (which will have its own gaming division) will release the first “great” AI-generated game before the end of 2026. Sounds ambitious? Yes. Realistically? Theoretically, no, but looking at the latest developments in technology, things are starting to get interesting.

AI in gamedev = Nihil Novi

Let’s start with the facts. Artificial intelligence in game development is not science fiction or Musk’s discovery. The industry has been using genAI for some time – from texture generation, through procedural level creation, to voice dubbing. Microsoft has already shown an AI-generated version of Quake II that creates graphics in real time, and Roblox has introduced the Roblox Cube tool to help developers build new worlds. So the idea of a fully AI-generated game is not as revolutionary as it may seem.

What Musk is doing is simply another step in this evolution, but with his typical PR flourish.

What does xAI’s “great AI game” actually mean?

And here we come to the heart of the problem. Musk did not provide any specifics. We don’t know what the genre, mechanics, or even what exactly the term “AI-generated game” means. Are we talking about a game in which every element (from graphics, through music, to gameplay) will be generated by an AI model? Or rather a game that uses AI as a tool to support traditional developers?

The project will probably use the latest Grok 4 model and the Grok Imagine video generator to create virtual worlds in real time. It sounds impressive on paper, but the devil is in the details, and there are none of them yet.

Genie 3 from Google – generating full games is not that far away

It is worth noting that the romance of gaming with generative AI is not only a case of xAI and Musk’s ambitious plans. Google has recently released the third generation of the Genie engine, which allows you to generate fully playable 3D worlds based on a single image or text prompt. Sounds like a fairy tale? Genie 3 does quite well with physics, animations and simple interactions with NPCs. Yes, Genie 3 is impressive and allows us to assume that in the future such tools will be often used by game developers, even to create concepts.

What’s more, EA is also experimenting with genAI behind the scenes, as the corporation’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, himself admits. According to him, in the near future EA Games will create games with teams consisting of 40% of experts and artists, while the remaining 60% will be all kinds of AI tools and agents. At the investor meeting, EA even showed the initial concept of WorldBuilder based on genAI and the creation of simple FPS (First Person Shouter games) from prompts.

RPG or shooter? Speculation about the species

Returning to the topic of xAI and Musk, gaming fans begin to speculate what the first game created by AI will be. Given the preferences of Musk, who openly admits to his love of RPG games such as Diablo IV, The Battle of Polytopia and Path of Exile, we can assume that the first xAI title will be something in this style. On the other hand, the mass popularity of shooters à la Call of Duty or Battlefield may tempt the company to create something more mainstream.

Can AI create engaging, balanced gameplay mechanics? Will it generate interesting lore and characters that players will want to spend dozens of hours with? We’ll find out by the end of next year 😉

Will xAI overtake GTA 6?

There’s a funny temporal context here. Musk promises the game before the end of 2026. GTA 6 is scheduled to debut in the fall of 2025 (at least theoretically – knowing Rockstar, delays are more than likely). So technically speaking, xAI’s AI game could actually come out after one of the most anticipated titles of the decade. But comparing these two projects is like putting an electric bicycle prototype and a supercar refined over the years side by side.

Recruitment continues – but what does that mean?

Interestingly, xAI has been actively recruiting game developers since February 2024, looking for people interested in designing AI games. The next announcement appeared on October 2. This suggests that the project is in a relatively early stage of development, which makes the promise of a “big game” in less than two years quite… optimistic.

On the one hand, it’s hard to underestimate the ambition. If xAI does indeed create a fully functional, engaging AI-generated game, it will be a milestone in the history of the industry. On the other hand, the history of Musk’s technological promises teaches a certain amount of caution. Autonomous taxis, colonies on Mars, Hyperloop… the list of “soon™” projects is long.

A gaming hit from xAI or a disappointment?

Will we see an AI game from xAI before the end of 2026? Probably yes – Musk rarely completely abandons public announcements. Will it be the “great” game it promises? It depends on how you define “great”. If we’re talking about a technological demonstration of AI’s capabilities, then maybe. When it comes to a game that will appear in Steam libraries and win the hearts of players like AAA hits, I will allow myself some healthy skepticism.

The gaming industry is watching, and we will all have the opportunity to see if AI can not only imitate creativity, but actually create it. And it will be a fascinating experiment – regardless of the outcome
